Video: There Is No Greater Sadness - June 10, 2009

Theme song: traditional Hungarian folk song from Transylvania
Music arrangement: Effi Shoshani Vocals, photos: Andrea Gerak

ENGLISH TRANSLATION:

There is no greater sadness in the world
Than when those get married who don't love each other,
If she has to hug him, she says her arms hurt,
If she has to kiss him, she sheds tears.

I love you, I love you, but tell it to no-one
Till they carry me laid out on the church's ground.
Don't tell it to your mother that I love you,
No-one should know that I'm dying for you.

Love, love, wretched anguish
Why didn't you blossom on the leaves of each tree
On the leaves of each tree, at the bottom of each bush,
Let each boy and girl pluck you.

'cause I've already plucked one and also missed it,
Instead of a tame dove, I caught a wild one,
I would pluck again if I found a good one,
If a good one, if a nice one, my old flame.

For my old flame what wouldn't I do,
I would scoop the water out of the sea with a spoon,
From the sea bottom I would pick tiny pearls,
For my old flame I would bind a pearl-wreath.

Concert review: the Jive Aces in Hungary - May 20, 2009

"The Jive Aces are advertising themselves as the UK's #1 swing and jive band but it is not true. They are already much more than that.

It was an honor for me to perform before them on last Saturday and a fantastic experience to attend most of the gigs of their short Hungary tour.

One could also say that as a Hungarian folk singer and dancer, the author of this review doesn't have anything to do with swing, jive, boogie-woogie, rock and roll, but this isn't true either. ..."

Csángó Tükör interview - February 8, 2009

In the latest issue of CsángóTükör (Csango Mirror) you can read the first part of an interview with Andrea Gerak. The editors couldn't have timed it better than just before the Csango Ball in Budapest (the link is from 2005, but they have it in the same place this year as well) and the Csango Farsang (Carnival) in Eger. At the latter, Andrea will also perform as a guest.

"I set down for a tea with Lidia in the autumn at Gödör, and we had a great talk, first of all about my trip to Moldva last summer which has given me so many experiences that the majority of what I have seen and heard are still in my head and computer, waiting for being processed. I enjoyed this conversation a lot; it gave me an opportunity to think over and evaluate tings deeply, also for myself." - Andrea

The interview has been published uncut, without editing and this way the reader can enjoy a real, live conversation, on four pages. (In Hungarian.)

We Heart Music review - December 27, 2008

Andrea is recommended by WeHeartMusic.com, a US-based music blog by 30 music lovers, featuring the most different styles of songs and artists.

"What caught my attention right away about Andrea Gerak is that she had covered "Rorogwela", which had been recorded earlier as "Sweet Lullaby" by Deep Forest on their eponymously titled CD, and was a huge hit in the early '90s. But Gerak deserves plenty of recognition in her own right, ..." read more

Human Rights Gala - December 18, 2008

On the 10th of December, the Sweden branch of Youth for Human Rights International (YHRI-S) presented an opportunity to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Universal Declaration of Human Rights with international artists.

Besides Master of Ceremony Samson Mande, European Human Rights Hero awardee, several renown human rights activists honored the event. Norsang Drikung, leader of Tibetan Community in Sweden and Dr. Elfatih Shora, member of International Rescue Nubia organization spoke about issues demanding solutions in their countries, while Stig Johnell from Amnesty International took up several situations worldwide, including Sweden.

Honorary guest speaker Mrs. Jacqueline Mukangira, Ambassador of Republic of Rwanda to Sweden and Nordic Countries highlighted the evening, who told stories of how her country has risen from genocide to a safe and prosperous land, setting a good example of finding constructive solutions to various problems.

The audience was entertained by a colorful concert of classical, pop and world music, dance from Africa, Asia, America and Europe. In the artist line-up, different ages, races, music styles and most of the continents were represented.

Latvian viola/piano duo Ineta & Milda Zigure gave the concert a very aesthetic opening. Mrs Sonoko Kase's students from Östermalm Private Music School performed Japanese children songs, piano and ballet pieces. Venezuelan born soprano Gabriela Gonzáles-Toledo, who is also an active lecturer in Latin American music and culture, entertained with beautiful opera and musical songs. Hungarian folk singer Andrea Gerak's choice of Romany National Anthem was perfect for the occasion and really hit home to the audience. Swedish singer-songwriter Mimmi Siegel sweetened the mood while rock singer Lizette& and Nsako Afrodans, a group performing tribal music and dance from Uganda broke the floor with high energy sounds and moves.

The attendees appreciated the international diversity, the very informative speeches, high artistic quality and the relaxed atmosphere of the gala. The event concluded with the participating representatives expressing their intentions to further co-operate in order to make human rights a reality.

Cover Girl - November 7, 2008

An old paper was found whith Andrea Gerak smiling on the cover. The photo and a short article appeared for the Sweden tour of Bartok Dance Ensemble in 1991, in the magazin of the Swedish Industrial Trade Union, Fabriks:

"On the cover Andrea Gerak from Budapest, Hungary, dancing a bottle dance.

Andrea is one of the artists of Bartok Dance Ensemble.

Bela Bartok (1880-1945) is a great name in Hungarian classical and folk music. We heard much about him on the radio this summer.

In Hungary, the Union greatly appreciates culture. Since long, the Chemistry Workers Trade Union has been sponsoring the Bartok group, which does Hungarian folk music and dance, well known in the whole world.

The ensemble has been to near 20 countries. This time they were dancing at many Fabriks places, events for celebrating the 100th anniversary of Fabrik. The pictures were taken at the festivities in Brunnspark, Ronneby, of which we write on pages 12 and 13.

In a fight for a nicer world, we need Andrea and the Bartók Ensemble."

The 50th Anniversay Gala and its public dress rehearsal will take place on Sunday, at the Palace of Arts in Budapest.

October letter from Andrea - October 18, 2008

Now I seriously start to consider getting mobile internet - if I am on the road many times for weeks, it's NOT comfy to find net cafés all the time and pay a lot for using a computer which is today a very basic business tool.

But this time I might still do this in the old way, so please don't be disappointed that I can't keep contact with you as much as I would love to.

Where do I go? Well, you can guess: Hungary, of course :-)

Singing a bit, dancing a lot, doing my business, visiting friends and family, seeing fellow musicians, eating nice stuff...

If you are around and can make it to any of my gigs, I will be the happiest to see you there!!

And even you know what? you can even give me a call on my Hungarian number and see if we can have a tea - wouldn't that be awesome? +36704023173

Otherwise, surf around on my sites (here is a link directory to all of 'em: music, photos, private etc) and you can find all kind of nice things - for example, did you know about the download specials where you can get any of my 3 albums for even 0.-$? Well, check it out and get some!

Also, why not follow me on Twitter?

Have to go now, still figuring out what clothes to pack :-))

Wish you great times till I see you again,

Andrea
