Andrea Gerak will be backing up BURNS at the release concert of their new album Stockholm Sky.
The Irish musician and songwriter Brian Burns is launching a new album and a music video, Stockholm Sky. In the title song Brian depicts a bittersweet farewell to a dear friend with motifs from the capital of Sweden.
"Stockholm is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Nature is everywhere and it feels as if I come home. I have grown up with nature up close," he says.
Brian Burns came to Sweden to Umeå through his work in 2005, after working several years in Germany and France. He had no intention to stay in Sweden for a long time. But the love of Norrland - that inspired the creation of new music - meant that he stayed in the Nordic country. After three years he moved to Stockholm.
The new album Stockholm Sky, which was recorded in New York this year, is in regular record stores and available on Spotify and iTunes from September. At the concert, there will be songs from the last BURNS album Innocence Lost as well.
BURNS and Friends (musicians from Sweden, Ireland, Hungary, Germany and the USA) to perform at Stampen in Stockholm on the 24th October (see Calendar)
"When it comes to music, Stockholm is international and is absolutely top class. There are many talented musicians, creating a great spirit and acceptance of various forms of music, which is very inspiring," says Brian.
Andrea Gerak, who back in Hungary used to have a close relationship and performed with the band M.É.Z. that has established Celtic music in the country, and to whom as a Hungarian folk singer, Irish folk songs are very close as well, gladly said yes when she was asked to sing at the launch.
Istvan Tamas met Andrea Gerak at 11th Borsod Arts Festival in Hungary. The interview appeared on Zene.hu, the biggest Hungarian music portal, on Canadian Hungarian Journal and on many other news sites.
Already when five, Andrea demanded a spot for herself on stage. In a very young age, as a child, she was singing and dancing in the Borsod, Avas, Csepel and Bartók folk dance groups. She travelled all over Europe, as a lover and performer of Hungarian folk songs and world music.

We are very glad to announce that Israeli composer Effi Shoshani released a long awaited world music album, Mother Tongue, with the country's leading record label Helicon. Seven female singers (who all happen to be mothers) from seven countries each sing a folk song from their homelands, arranged with the wonderfully soothing Effi Shoshani sound. It's a special honor that Andrea has two songs on the album.
"I met Effi and his beautiful wife a good couple of years ago when they, just by chance, heard me singing in a park here in Budapest. They got my first acapella CD Madárka, Madárka, and a few months later Effi sent me an email. He said he has made some music to one of the songs from my CD, showed it to his friends who...

Review, photos, videos follow, as we get hold of them...
"Andrea Gerak singer excelled with her Hungarian songs as well as in vocalized parts." Full review (in Dutch, use a translator)
What listeners say: "We were there Thursday night and everyone in the family liked it! It was moving to see how each musician played with dedication and obvious enjoyment, and the singer with her enchanting voice brought Transylvania a little closer to Flanders ... Will there be a CD of this music??"
Andrea Gerak and Zoltan Lantos present their duo on the 27th of October 2010, at IF Café, Budapest IX., 19 Ráday str.
"The Hungarian voice that will keep one excited. Without fear, she experiments with traditional subjects, mainly with those coming from her country, approaching them from different angles. Nothing resists her; neither new age, nor world fusion, nor a cappella interpretations..." - Sobre Las Aireadas Olas
In many corners of the world, the name and of course, first of all the voice of Budapest and Stockholm based Andrea Gerak equals Hungarian folk song. With Irish, Turkish, Bulgarian and other folk songs, she takes the listener to other lands as well, even to such exotic places as the Solomon Islands. Performing solo, with music...
"It was an incredible feeling to visit the then village where my family came from and where I have spent many summers in my childhood with my Grandma and cousins. Now, after more than 20 years, Ibrány became a town and its face has changed a lot, with great modern buildings, a very nice, prospering little city - yet I arrived home to my folks, met several relatives and many people who all seemed to be friends with each other. Indeed, the atmosphere during my entire stay was great, very friendly, people enjoying the concerts and other events of the two days.
Besides enjoying the few sunny days in and around beautiful Stockholm, the days have been busy here: watch out for very exciting new collaborations, the latest acapella album This Way, Sweetheart! soon on CD Baby, iTunes and all the good online stores, and for concerts.
The next, most anticipated show is in Ibrány (Eastern Hungary), for the St Stephen Festivities on the 20th of August.
"For me, this national holiday is the nicest one of the three that we Hungarians have, and I am looking forward to this day very much. This is the town where my family is from (and as far as I know, all the Gerak families in Hungary), I spent a lot of time there as a child with my grandmother, cousins and other relatives. Now when I was invited, I got a bit emotional, for I have not...
A few weeks ago, the Hungarian singer has started a fundraising project to aid volunteers helping Haitians, effected by the recent earthquake. A cross-genre compilation download album is being made, with international artists who responded to Andrea Gerak's call, offering a track for the cause.
In the meantime, administrative issues had to be resolved with PayPal, ensuring the fully charitable nature of the donations. That is done, so now the project can continue to accept and send money.
In the past days, one volunteer arrived from Sweden to stay in Haiti for 3 months and another one from Hungary who is at Miami airport at the moment, loading the cargos going to Haiti, while waiting for...

Andrea Gerak wishes a great year to everyone with these words:
"After the holidays mood, celebrations, parties, tomorrow, Monday morning everything goes "back to normal": people start the ordinary working days, kids go to school. Christmas decorations are already hidden in boxes, but hopefully the spirit of love stays with us and new year resolutions stick longer than a couple of enthusiastic days or weeks.
Despite the worldwide financial crisis and very hard, challenging events in my personal life, I can say 2009 was a great year for me, in terms of creativity and activity: I became an endorser of World March for Peace and Non-Violence, opened an online webshop with photo gifts, performed with excellent musicians in new collaborations, amongst others with Fabatka, created a few videos, like this one: Read More...
The first buyers already got Andrea Gerak's second acapella solo CD, with mostly Hungarian folk songs and an Irish, a Turkish and a Solomon Islands traditional tune, and the album is now available for download as well.
It's been more than eleven years now that Andrea recorded her first album, Madárka, madárka (Little Birdie), and the haunting Hungarian folk songs are still flying around the world, giving joy to listeners and being downloaded on iTunes, Amazon, Rhapsody, Last FM and other music sites, the CDs travel continents.
With a few thousand singing hours, more versatile vocal technique and performing skills, extended repertoire and intense life experiences under Andrea's belt since then, the time was well ripe for a new release. For many listeners loved the idea of having a voice only album,...
The Hungarian singer was asked by organizers of a Copenhagen Climate Conference event to open a 2-day convention, Road To Copenhagen. Andrea delivers a show together with a young Swedish collegue Ewa Wikström and Romanian composer Julien Matei. The two ladies will sing pieces of Matei who will play the piano. Their short concert is to greet the three co-chairs of the conference and provide a high spirit kick-off for the event.
For the Tuesday evening cultural program and coctail, world star opera diva Barbara Hendricks was expected in the Council Chamber of Malmö City Hall, but she is not able to perform, due to her upcoming concert in France. Thus the Matei-Gerak-Wikström trio gives a longer program for the attendees before the gala dinner, performing together as well as each artist...
